Founded: In 1955 in Norfolk by a group of concerned parents

Headquarters: 1161 Ingleside Road, Norfolk

About us: Eggleston is a multi-faceted and vibrant organization serving the needs of persons with disabilities. It has over 560 employees, many of whom are individuals and veterans with disabilities. Eggleston offers residential services, day-support programs, veterans programs, and extensive supported employment programs dedicated to the empowerment of persons with disabilities.

Current leadership: The CEO of this nonprofit agency is Paul Atkinson

Milestones reached: In 1974 the Wagner O’Day Act was amended by Jacobs Javits and was branded as NISH, National Industries for the Severely Handicapped (today known as Ability One Program). The Javits Wagner O’Day Act allowed organizations like Eggleston that employ individuals with disabilities to fulfill contracts to either provide a service or make goods that will be sold to the federal government. Eggleston received its first two NISH contracts in 1990, the beginning of a long and beneficial relationship with the federal government.

In 1998, the agency started a vehicle donation program in which it handles every aspect of the donation process.

In 2004, Eggleston started offering residential services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Today it provides residential support for 37 individuals and has about 200 participating in the day programs.

Obstacles overcome: One of the largest obstacles we face is there are not enough government resource and funding for the increasing number of individuals with disabilities.

Keys to longevity: The generosity of the community and being good stewards of the gifts and donations we have received. The partnerships we have made with the government and local businesses to provide employment opportunities for those we serve. Taking calculated risks to grow and diversify the organization. Growing and maintaining strong connections between the board of directors, staff, community and the families of those we serve.

What’s next: Continue to grow our veterans and work programs. Continue to create a more community inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities.
