Artist Billy Fields is a traditional stone mason, and the placement and arrangement of the ancient stones (Kapeamahu) used in this sculptural installation represent his tribute to the healing arts and to the ancient Hawaiian Kapeamahu tradition and folk tale of spiritual healers who transferred their wisdom to four ancient stones.
This public artwork is a central component of the Hawaiian cultural monument "Nā Pōhaku Ola O Kapaemahu A Me Kapuni." The monument includes a ceremonial stone (Ta'ahu Ea / The Life) contributed by Tahitian dignitaries, traditional medicinal plants, and historical information plaques.
