What it Means to be a Volunteer

Volunteer counselors answer calls on a local hotline for emotional support and mental health crises a well as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline–which might sound a little overwhelming. Our training is very thorough and you’ll have the support of dozens of other volunteer counselors and staff.

You can truly be a lifesaver.

Informational meetings are held in January, May, and August/September; they are open to the public and provide information about HQCC, our training program, and what it’s like to volunteer at the center. Training is held three times each year, beginning in February, June, and September.

While being a volunteer counselor involves a major commitment, it is also incredibly rewarding. This is valuable training and experience for anyone, regardless of career path or stage of your life. You will learn basic listening and counseling skills that will be useful in your personal and professional life. HQCC is a great opportunity to work with a group of caring people who want to make a difference by providing direct, meaningful service to people who turn to us for help.

We offer a thorough training program, so no previous training or experience is needed. All you need is compassion and the willingness to help others.
