INTRODUCING KATIE My name is Katherine Rutz-Robbins and I am very excited to be an intern and humanities expert here at MOTAL, where I am able to blend my passion for education and love of museums.
I grew up visiting museums and galleries and always loved the learning about the pieces on display. I explored the Getty as a child, which was one of my very first memories in a museum space. As a teen, I spent hours inside the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, taking special care to go through each room in their maze of galleries. My mother and I would even plan trips specifically for museum visits. Our visit to New York City in 2017 was jam-packed with every gallery we could fit into our short 48 hours there, one of which was Gulliver’s Gate, a miniature interactive world created by master model makers. After taking my first art history class, I was able to truly engage with the work and understand how art can be a way to tell stories about people and culture.
I recently graduated from the University of California, Irvine, where I majored in Art and minored in Literary Journalism. While at UCI, I led the photography section of our campus newspaper, New University, and edited for an online marketing magazine. During my final year at UCI (right before the pandemic hit) I interned for the Education Department at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana and assisted the Public Programs Manager. While there, I found that I am interested in how the visitors engage with the museum setting and how museums can be a vehicle for public education through storytelling. People never stop being curious and the museum setting has the ability to feed into that curiously and create a space for life-long learning.
Now, I am a graduate student pursuing my MA in Cultural Studies with a concentration in Museum Studies at Claremont Graduate University. I am looking forward to contributing to the museum world, telling the stories that need to be told, and creating engaging and educational content.
