BALT's 2022 Movement Lawyering Workshop Application is LIVE!

Baltimore Action Legal Team is proud to announce the revival of our Movement Lawyering Workshop. It has been 5 years since our last session and are excited to continue to build capacity to help support the movement for Black lives.

We are looking for attorneys, law students, and law practitioners with a strong commitment to Baltimore and Maryland and a desire to promote movement lawyering as one creative strategy/tool to resist and dismantle systemic racism and other forms of oppression.

Through this free workshop, it is our goal to:

  • Facilitate the unlearning of cultural norms within the legal profession which stem from white supremacy and other forms of oppression.

  • Build the capacity of local movement legal workers to apply their learning within their careers in the legal profession.

  • Encourage workshop participants to engage in movement lawyering (or utilize legal tools) outside of the legal profession and in the community (e.g. providing legal observation support for direct actions, etc.)

Participants will learn:

  • How local activists are resisting systemic racism and oppression,

  • How pretrial detention was impacted by bail reform and the Covid-19 pandemic,

  • How attacks on reproductive rights disproportionately impact marginalized communities,

  • Limitations of the law affect our ability to dismantle systemic racism,

  • And more!

You can now apply to participate through Friday, July 8th. The sessions will be held Friday, August 5th and Friday, August 12th 9:00am - 2:00pm via Zoom. Please submit applications by July 1.
