This is one of the most important projects I've ever led. Huge gratitude to partners and friends in #Bakhdeda and #Shingal. Baraa Jabbo Sr.Makrina Finlay Assyrian Aid Society of America
With funding from @aliph_foundation, API worked with teams in Nineveh, Iraq to document imperiled heritage practices for posterity and as reminders for contemporary and future communities. In Shingal, two documentary shorts explore the Ezidi practice of xêr (shared blessings), and to the east in Bakhdeda, a five-part series looks at the famous shals (aprons), hand-embroidered by the historic Syriac community. The films will be available for viewing on API’s website in coming months. Keep an eye on your inbox for an announcement! #CulturalHeritagePreservation #Ezidi #Syriac #Embroidery #Xêr

Fahed Shamo, an Ezidi from Tel Azeer, grew up with his seven siblings on the southern side of Mount Shingal in Iraq. In 2014 he escaped ISIS with his family, first to the holy mountain and then to Kurdistan, where they were displaced for six years. In 2020, Fahed and his family returned to Shingal and last August (2023), the parading of the peacock returned as well! Did API Fellow @dplandis and his journey inspire a trip to southeastern Turkey? If so, consider adding Urfa, or Şanlıurfa, to your itinerary and make a stop at @nomadinnturkey. Last year we awarded a micro-grant to restore facilities at the inn, and today visitors are treated to a unique experience highlighting traditional Urfa life. To help plan your adventure, reach out to former API Fellow and local partner, Ömer Tanık of @nomadtravelturkey. Swipe for more photos of the refurbished inn! Over the last few weeks we’ve followed Senior Fellow David Landis on his bicycle expedition from Urfa to Erbil, crossing the northern watersheds of the Euphrates, the Tigris, and the Zab Rivers. And thanks to social media, we were right there with him! David explored the spaces between the rivers, documenting the sights, sounds, and people he encountered on each leg of the journey. We witnessed reunions with old friends, the making of new ones, and experienced countless acts of kindness from strangers along the way. While the physical expedition has ended, the journey is ongoing. Stay tuned for an update from later this spring as David reflects on his experiences and talks about what’s next! Şanlıurfa (or Urfa), is situated 80 km east of the Euphrates River in southeastern Türkiye. Previously known as Urhai and Edessa, this Silk Road city is home to thousands of years of human history. In 2023, @nytimes published an article by @barry_yourgrau highlighting what the city has to offer visitors. From archaeological sites to culinary delights, Şanlıurfa has something for everyone. Keep an eye on our feed for updates from southeastern Türkiye as part of API’s 2024 Senior Fellowships! Last fall API Fellow @omertanik6336 undertook a project to re-waymark part of Abraham’s Path Türkiye - known locally as Ibrahim Yolu. With the help of volunteers, Ömer successfully re-waymarked the stage between Yuvacali and Kisas, in preparation for visitors returning to southeast Türkiye. Swipe to see an API Fellowship in action!
