#ICYMI: The sixth edition of "The Community Connection", our quarterly newsletter about our efforts to support the power and potential of communities, has been released! As we make our way through the first few months of 2024, many extraordinary things are happening at RCAP Solutions. It's Time to Promote Equitable Access to Safe Drinking Water for Private Well Owners Across Massachusetts! Amendment #1104, "Well Water Study", to the Massachusetts House Budget – sponsored by Representative Meghan Kilcoyne and Representative Smitty Pignatelli – would provide funding for a study that would be the first step in developing a drinking water program for private wells to ensure that ALL Massachusetts residents have access to safe water! In the Commonwealth, over 500,000 people get their water from a private well. However, unlike public water systems, there are no statewide protections to ensure these wells are safe from contaminants, including #PFAS. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP)'s recent PFAS Private Well Sampling Program has found that ~15% of wells had PFAS levels exceeding new federal health standards. Recently, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued the first-ever national, legally enforceable drinking water standard to protect communities from exposure to harmful #PFAS substances, also known as "forever chemicals". In this article from the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Dr. Amie Shei, President & CEO of The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts noted the new PFAS standard falls short because it doesn't require PFAS testing of private wells. In the Commonwealth, over 500,000 people get their water from a private well. However, unlike public water systems, there are no statewide protections to ensure these wells are safe from contaminants. Yesterday, RCAP Solutions was delighted to attend the UMass Epilepsy Education Conference, hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation New England! Dr. Natalie Erlich-Malona of UMass Memorial Health and Dr. Neville Jadeja of UMass Chan Medical School gave an informative presentation about music therapy for those living with epilepsy as well as new anti-seizure medications. In addition, we provided information to attendees about our various independent living programs – the Home Modification Loan Program (#HMLP), the Housing Consumer Education Center (HCEC), financial assistance for renters (the RAFT program), our Affordable Housing Properties, and more – all of which can help people with disabilities (including those living with epilepsy) remain safely housed.
