What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is an event in which programmers, graphic designers, content strategists, interface designers, and project managers collaborate intensively on projects.

Or as we like to call it: an event where people work together to find new (sometimes inelegant) solutions to a problem.

Who should attend?

If you’ve ever taken a GDI class, jumped into an online tech tutorial, or joined other coding events, this is a great opportunity to take the skills you’ve learned and apply them to a collaborative project working with like-minded individuals. But even if you haven’t attended any tech bootcamps or coding events, you’re absolutely welcome to join! Beginners and the tech-curious are especially encouraged to attend, as are experienced technologists who are interested in sharing their knowledge and skills while working on projects that they are passionate about.

What will this event look like?

This event will kick off with a series of pre-Hackathon events including:

  • Hackathon Info Session
  • Installathon to upload and learn about tools
  • Mentor Session to be paired for support
  • Idea Generation and Team Formation
The event will then kick off on Wednesday, November 16, with events, presentations, and an awards ceremony running through Saturday, November 19th.

In addition to hacking collaboratively with your team, participants are welcome to join:

  • Panel discussions
  • Skills workshops
  • Career networking
  • Office hours
  • Presentations and Awards Ceremony on Nov. 19
How to attend?

We have two registration options:

  • Attendee: Join to be placed with a hacking team; or choose to participate in the panel discussions and presentation events.
  • Mentor: Support our teams, workshops, and events. Mentors can build their own schedules and support teams when it works best for them. Mentors are required to attend a brief information session.

What do you need to participate?

No much! Just an interest to learn, create and engage with our community. Our basic requirement is access to a computer with the option to join a video conference. We will be hosting an information session a week before the event to answer questions and make sure you are comfortable with the event. We will also be hosting:

  • An Install-athon to make sure you have access to the software you will need
  • An Idea Generation & Team Formation event to ensure you have time to share your events and build teams
  • A Git & Github for hackathons event to learn how to collaborate on code with version control
Interested in doing more?

We are looking for Sponsors to help support the event and provide prizes to our teams. We are also looking for mentors to support our teams. Register for our mentor information session if you are interested.
