NEW JERSEY - Authorities in Middlesex County are investigating two incidents of graffiti on the new mural located in downtown Highland Park.

The defaced portion of the mural depicts a woman wearing a hair covering, according to a photo posted to Facebook by the Highland Park Police Department.

“The HPPD is in contact with the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office regarding the defacement,” Highland Park police said. “We will have additional updates as the investigation progresses.”

Those with information about the incident are urged to call the Highland Park Police Department at 732-572-3800. Those who live or work in the vicinity of 75 Raritan Ave and have cameras are also asked to call the department or detectives@hpboro.com.

The mural, unveiled earlier this month, is dubbed “Home Is Where We Make It.” Designed and installed by Amrisa Niranjan, the mural was inspired by community conversations, including refugee and asylee support organization Interfaith RISE and the local refugee community and Black Community Watchline. It also garnered support from Main Street Highland Park and the Highland Park Arts Commission.

“It means you are welcome to create a home here and ‘we’ the community will support you making your home here with us,” Niranjana said in a press release during the unveiling.
