According to a study published in 2012 by the American College Health Association, the number of college students identifying as LGBTQ has almost doubled.  This survey of 90,000 students from across the country, of diverse genders, all races, and all nationalities revealed that 17% identify as being other than heterosexual.  As society evolves and students feel more comfortable “coming out” about their sexual orientation or gender identity, this historically invisible population will continue to grow in visibility.  According to the Campus Pride “2010 State of Higher Education for LGBT People” 70% of first-year LGBTQ college students consider leaving school out of fear from being bullied or harassed. A Safe Space Program has been shown to be an effective tool for helping LGBTQ students feel safe and included in the college community.

The Campus Pride Safe Space Program is a nationally recognized program that provides training and signage for institutions committed to supporting LGBTQ students.  A Safe Space Program is one of the measures of a supportive campus on the Campus Pride Index.  We offer three types of training programs to meet the needs of you and your campus.

Safe Space Train The Trainer Program

The Campus Pride Safe Space Train The Trainer Program is our most comprehensive approach for a campus that desires to create a sustainable Safe Space Program.  We will come to your campus to train faculty, administrators, staff, and students on how to construct a Safe Space Program and deliver the essential training to Safe Space Program participants.  This program includes 6-8 hours of instruction and licensing permissions to embed your campus logo into the Campus Pride Safe Space logo.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the essential components of a campus Safe Space Program.
2. Understand the content of a Safe Space Training Program.
3. Create a learning activity to be used in a Safe Space Training Program.
4. Describe effective practices for creating an inclusive campus environment for LGBTQ students.

Safe Space Training In Person

An effective Safe Space Program includes training for faculty, administrators, staff, and students participating in the program and visible signage to identify Safe Space locations.  Campus Pride offers this essential training in a 2-3 hour format.  We will come to your campus and train your staff in a highly interactive and informative workshop.  Note: A version of this is also available online.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the difference between sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
2. Define terminology used to describe sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
3. Identify ways to create an inclusive classroom and campus space for LGBTQ students.
4. Learn and understand key moments in the LGBTQ civil rights movement. (Included in 4-hour workshop)
5. Explore ways to support LGBTQ people in the coming out process. (Included in 4-hour workshop)

Workshop participants will receive a certificate of completion that can be displayed in work areas to promote the Safe Space. Signage is available for purchase by certificate holders in the Campus Pride Shop.

Workshops are typically scheduled at least 90 days in advance.  For planning purposes, a signed contract must be received by Campus Pride at least 45 days before the first day of a workshop.

Safe Space Training Online

For campuses or individuals who are unable to have Campus Pride on campus to provide Safe Space training or who would like to explore this training immediately, we offer an online course throughout the year. We can also arrange and plan one specific to your campus community.
