A Letter of Appeal

These times. We are in the thick of it. Both the joy and the pain of these times. Maine Prisoner Advocacy Coalition is grateful for your contributions.

Did you know that 20% of Maine’s population has been impacted by the criminal justice system, and 40,000 Mainers cycle through our prisons and jails each year?

Here are a few of the places where you have made a difference over the last 12 months:

  • Mentoring, Coaching, Caring, and Peer Support: MPAC staff is a daily presence for youth currently at Long Creek and those recently released, giving them hope, practical strategies, and support for a positive path to their future. MPAC increased peer support and mentoring to our system-impacted (family) during times of community losses and, most recently, the Lewiston tragedy.

  • Re-entry: Re-entry Sisters is developing a program with the capacity to support ten women leaving incarceration with coping strategies for trauma, outdoor activities, and continued community. MPAC continues to work with community partners to secure reentry housing for system-impacted people.

  • The Arts: We encourage the development of the artistic talents of those currently incarcerated by staging art exhibitions and holding community events, each of which provides system-impacted people opportunities to embrace more of their whole selves.

  • Advocacy: MPAC advocates for fair and just treatment for those who are currently incarcerated, resulting in more equitable access to programming for women and greater access to healthcare and education for all.

  • Policy Change: We advocated in the legislature for policy changes resulting in increased community resources for youth, strengthened Board of Visitor oversight of prisons and county jails, and a MaineCare exemption (after federal approval) allowing incarcerated individuals to receive MaineCare for 30 days prior to release.

Our Mission

MPAC's mission is to support Maine's incarcerated citizens, their families, and friends, in their struggle with Maine's criminal justice system. Our purpose is to reduce Maine's use of incarceration by creating a criminal justice system that is ethical, humane, and restorative in nature. We serve approximately 1/5 of all Maine citizens who have been impacted by our criminal justice system and those that love them.

“As an inmate, I would like to thank you. It’s important to me that someone is out there standing up for the rights of inmates. Knowing all the good work you’re doing definitely gives me motivation to stay positive”

— Jonathan
