Thursdays with Thoreau image with WWP logoMany people turn to Thoreau to help guide them through daily life. In these challenging days during the COVID-19 public health crisis, that might be even more true for some of us.  While social distancing is in place, The Walden Woods Project is hosting Thursdays with Thoreau, to bring us together to share how Thoreau’s words and ideas are helping us through.

Participants are asked to bring quotations or general ideas from Thoreau on a theme each week. Registration will be limited each session. Participants will be able to join the conversation via Zoom or telephone.

Weekly themes:

    • April 2, 10-11 AM  and 4-5 PM (EST)Thoreau in the time of COVID-19: How is Thoreau helping you through these challenging times?
    • April 9, 10-11 AM and 4-5 PM (EST)SOLITUDE: For many, our current stay-at-home orders have us thinking more about solitude. How have you turned to Thoreau in your contemplation on this topic?
    • April 16, 10-11 AM and 4-5 PM (EST)FRIENDSHIP: How has this global crisis made you think about friendship in general or specific friendships? What insight does Thoreau offer us in this regard?
    • April 23, 10-11 AM and 4-5 PM (EST)SOCIETY: What do these times suggest about us as a society and how can Thoreau’s words help us reflect on where we are currently as a society?
    • April 30, 10-11 AM and 4-5 PM (EST)SPRING: “Shall a man not have his spring as well as the plants?”(Journal, June 1850) How have you been able to experience and observe the transformations of spring this year? Has social distancing allowed you more or less opportunity to notice these seasonal changes? What metaphorical lessons, many noted by Thoreau, does spring have to offer us?
    • May 7, 10-11 AM and 4-5 PM (EST)LIVING WITHOUT REGRETS: May 6 marks the anniversary of Thoreau’s passing. On his death bed, Thoreau stated that he had no regrets about his life. What would it take to come to the end of one’s life and have no regrets? In what ways did Thoreau’s life and outlook put him in that position? Are you inspired in this way by Thoreau’s life?
