Let's bring Safawi home safe to her hero

A homeless mother dog in the Middle East suffered a brutal attack. She was stabbed several times and had both her ears cut off and miraculously, she survived without medical treatment. An even greater measure of her spirit is that she still trusted humans; she became family to U.S. soldiers deployed overseas and chose Army Specialist Stephan as her person.

Now, the gentle dog faces being left to fend for herself again in such a hostile environment, and desperate to get her out of harm's way, our hero reached out to us for help to get her best friend to safety.

We need your help to save her.

U.S. Army Specialist Stephan first encountered Safawi while on patrol. The dog had wounds on her body, she was very thin, dehydrated, heavily pregnant, and had clearly spent long years surviving on the streets. Wary of people after suffering horrific abuse, she didn't come close but SPC Stephan could see she wanted to. She left some food and water for the hungry dog and gave her space to eat.

When she returned after her shift the next day she expected the dog to be long gone, but to her surprise she was still in the same spot. She gave her more food and sat with her for a couple of hours, and soon discovered the sweet natured dog just wanted to love, and be loved in return. She named her Safawi, meaning: "freedom loving and free spirited."

It became a daily routine to visit Safawi who was always waiting in the same place. She had no shelter, and sat through harsh weather and sandstorms even though the swirling sand scratched her eyes and made it hard to breathe. She just waited.

She waited, because this was the only place there was kindness.
Her soldier came here.

Somewhere in the desert night, Safawi gave birth to her puppies. Sadly, despite extensive efforts to find them and with no attempt by Safawi to return to them, we fear the worst. It was after this that Safawi began to follow Specialist Stephan closer to the army base where she imagined Safawi would be nervous with so many new people around, but it was as though she sensed no one there would hurt her, and she was right.

For the first time in her life, Safawi felt protected. And she soon learned that love is for her too. She fit right into life on the base - following the soldiers around, greeting them every morning, hanging out during off duty time, discovering the joy of belly rubs, and she became the highlight of everyone's day. More than that, she became family and she didn't want to leave.

As the soldiers neared the end of their deployment, the conversation naturally turned to concerns for Safawi.

With Specialist Stephan and everyone gone, who will she depend on?

There are currently no provisions in the military for bringing rescued animals back with the unit, and knowing the burden and heartbreak leaving new family members behind has on our service members is the reason our War-Torn Pups and Cats program exists: to make sure no one is forced to be abandoned.

If Safawi is left in the Middle East, who will feed and protect her in a place that has already caused her so much pain?

Tragically, Safawi's babies couldn't be helped, but we can save this gentle soul and reunite her with Specialist Stephan where she will have a life of love and safety here in America.

We can only do that with your help and if you are able to chip in even just a few dollars towards freeing Safawi from a life of suffering, every little makes a big difference towards giving this deserving girl a future.

Let's bring her home.

Thank you for being someone who cares.
